EY Song of The Week - Austra - 'Spellwork'
Words: Orac & Babooshka
02/05/11

Toronto's Kate Stelmanis has produced some tingly analogue magic on the Austra debut 'Feel it Break' and here's our choice cut now that someone has kindly leaked it to YouTube.

'Spellwork' could well have been born during that magical Depeche Mode era somewhere between 1985's 'It's Called A Heart' and the early recording sessions for 'Black Celebration' - supreme knob twisting of the highest order. Lots of muso blogs are comparing Kate to England's Bush and more bizarrely as a 'Goth Florence'. Of course, here at EY HQ...we don't think that Austra are Goth at all (slight disagreement at camp EY as Babooshka is currently pulling me up on this one).

'Spellwork' has a gorgeous and deep synth hook 1.05 mins into the track that vibrates through you and to reach this glorious effect simply blast out the YouTube link above. This is easily the best electronic track we've heard so far in 2011. Filmic, catchy and brilliant and we need more of this kind of thing.

Katie Stelmanis of Austra

Indeed we do so what can I add to that other than' Spellwork' is very deserving of EY track of the week. Enchanting vocals and a bassline that captures the beat and pulse of your soul, it's eerie yet hypnotically danceable and yes, it's very mode, mode, mode...Gore'geousness very simply.

As for the goth tag, this track, as many are on the album, is concerned with dark aesthetics, otherworldliness, esoteric knowledge, melodrama and romance so perhaps 'gothic' would separate it from the more urban tag that conjours images of so called misfits in tight black jeans. Hopefully the anguish of 'The Noise' and the rolling piano of' 'The Beast' will be leaked shortly to give you all a delicious taster of the dark and diverse beauty of this fabulous album.

For those of you that have morphed into Moz of late (Orac) and moaned continually about the Royal Wedding, Feel it Break will put some edgy romance back in your hearts...feel the spellwork around you. There's only two weeks to wait now and by then this promo will still be on continual play so jump and pre-order.

Dr Who - 'Day of The Moon

Other news...jump here for my review of  Doctor Who that Orac basically held a gun to my head and made me do, 'Day of the Moon' has been nicely nerded up with his contribution...enjoy.
