The Nerve Centre of EY is currently vibrating to the seductive 'emo electro' of 'Keep You' and before we get started on the genius of the bassline, there is plenty to admire in this quirky pop effort that skirts between light & dark with some very clever flashes of production genius.
Class Actress is Elizabeth Harper - a promising artist from Brooklyn who appears to be in the same space age analogue mould of Computer Magic's Danielle Johnson. Both acts have shunned the pre-sets and rack systems with a back to basics hands-on-knobs BEF approach that we will forever champion here on EY until someone turns out the lights.
Recommended to EY by regular reader Yvan, 'Keep You' instantly hooked us with unexpected bassline notes that blast straight through you and delicious layers of detuned synths that become more chaotic as the track progress - much like EY faves Niki & The Dove with 'Under The Bridges' and Sir Martin Rushent's warped trickery on The League's 'Fascination'.
What also lifts 'Keep You' above some of the rather ordinary electro that we've been bombarded with in 2011 is how Elizabeth's vox help ground the track with an exceedingly catchy chorus and she even throws in a magnificent 'air synth' moment of A-ha brilliance amidst sharp handclaps as the track reaches its climax. A less effective vocal may have rendered this effort totally useless but it all works so beautifully on the track you are about to play and totally love love love...
'Keep You' is taken from debut album 'Rapprocher' available now via the Carpark label
NME.com has confirmed that former EY fave Lady Hesketh AKA Little Books is officially back with a new single called 'Shake' and a follow-up to 2009's 'Hands' for sometime in 2012.
2009 was a dizzy time for the genre with two headline grabbing artists battling for chart places
and talk of a full on electro-pop revival. La Roux eventually won that battle on both sides of the
Atlantic and picked up a Grammy for her debut album in 2010 but the charts would eventually
surrender once again to X-Factor and Take That.
On the first listen Shake sounds a bit like Saint Etienne's take on one of Inner City's album
tracks that was sandwiched somewhere between gems such as 'Good Life' and 'Big Fun'. it's probably a wee bit too pedestrian and generic for our sensitive ears and lacks the instant love that we got from 'Stuck On Repeat' but it could be a grower? Simian Mobile Disco's EP earlier this year with the mighty Beth Ditto pulled this kind of thing off a lot better in our humble opinion but have a listen to the extended remix that makes good use of the bassline...
A London launch for 'Shake' will take place on December 3rd. For more details, please jump to the Little Boots Facebook page.
Ladyhawke is also back with a new album next Spring and Pip will be showcasing the tracks at London's 100 Club on Tuesday 15th. The event is now sold out but do expect audio spoilers to appear over on YouTube, Soundcloud etc in the coming week.
What on Earth has happened to La Roux's new album that was due for release this year? We don't think a three year gap between albums is a wise move in the current wonky climate of Planet Pop but we are keeping our eyes and ears peeled for news of the golden topped one.
