Death in Vegas featuring Katie Stelmanis - Your Loft

Death in Vegas

After a very long break, Richard Fearless is back with his band and a new album and yes there's not a Gallagher in sight this time round, it is time to forgive that mad foray into 'Beatleism' (ick) and focus more on the past genius of the likes of Dirge, a personal fave of mine especially since being used in Being Human's last supernatural spectacular.

Death in Vega' return with 'Your Loft' uses the recognisable vocals of Katie Stelmanis looping in ambient weirdness in places, very different from Austra's darkwave electronica. The album Trans Love Energies is out 12th Sept and does feature her guest vocalising on two tracks; good move by Mister Fearless.

Austra's Katie Stelmanis
The long spacey intro kicks into a retro acid sound (little person in the room thought I was playing a computer game, as if ) mixed in with some disco like vocal looping, a bit Debbie Harry mashed up with Donna Summer, very big sound, warm evening festival noise. If you like clubby electronica or Austra, this will interest you, if not more for Katie's flexibility and unexpected jump out of the dark side.

Bjork - Virus

Bjork

Track 3 from the ever growing 'project' Biophilia is 'Virus', completely what you would expect but at the same time 'not'...harmonious and percussion laden kookiness. An acrimonious metaphor for love, attaching to bodies with no escape yet still sounds so lovely.
'I feast inside you, my host is you' and

'I adapt, contagious, you open up, say welcome.' sounds like a command and that the 'perfect match' is inescapable.

'Virus' musically sounds very percussively cute but contradictory in its message of diseased love. I like it. Maybe it's me but 'virus' just sounds malevolent, 'love' however, bring on in bucket loads; a very interesting concept. It will be interesting to see how the Bestival crowd react to this new material on the closing night of the British festival season. Listen below.

Niki & the Dove - Last Night

Niki & the Dove certainly seem to be the darlings of blogspere and the popular music press at the moment which is great but the word 'haunting' is being bandied around like no tomorrow. I don't think there's been much overly haunting going on since 'Mother Protect' from last year and I'm still waiting for something as mind blowing as 'DJ' Ease My Mind'.

Having said that the EP 'The Fox' was pretty fab and the new track debut online 'Last Night' has the signature tribal drumming alongside some pure pop gorgeousness. I've never found the tracks 'instant' but that's often a good sign for me, the glitchy percussion of these passion power lyrically driven pop songs get to you in the end.

So never go solely by reviews basically, I hear 80's film soundtrack in this again, you may get a spooky spine chilling shiver from it, that's the beauty of music and of course reviewing, it's all subjective. Listen and decide for yourself....if there's one thing that can't be disputed, they're making a mark with some pretty unique music. Looking forward to what the next EP release will bring.
