Something rather beautiful collides
head on with a very menacing dimension of alt-synth for Emika's wondrously edgy new single 'Pretend'.
Lifted from the forthcoming debut album that is due for release on October 3rd, 'Pretend' could well be the oddest electronic tune to grace this page since the site began in 2001 but we are so ridiculously excited by it here at EYHQ.
'Pretend' is a remarkable manipulation of synthetic sound. It's the kind of knob fiddling that EY hopelessly adores, the attention to sonic detail, how each sound evokes an emotion without a care for commercial pressures.
One can imagine Emika wide awake at 5am with the dawn chorus trying to capture a sound that may only be audible for a few seconds on the final recording.
The deliciously sublime 'Pretend' has been aided by the release of a brilliant live performance recorded in Berlin earlier this year. Emika's Swing Out Sister bob and poker dots are fab but we draw your attention to the crispy synthetic pulses have that loveable quirky Bjork touch... where Crystalline' reaches its mutated 'dubstep' finale.

Emika's biggest influence 'from the past' is Delia Derbyshire, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop operative who
gave us the Dr Who theme back in 1963 - sonic innovation long before Kraftwerk (that's how good Delia was).
Live dates in the UK very soon please Miss Emika...
'Pretend' will be released by Ninja Tunes as a double A-side 12" vinyl along with 'Professional Loving' on September 5th.
