EY Tune Of The Week: High Places - Year Off
Words: Babooshka
07/11/11

High Places

High Places are LA based duo Rob Barber and Mary Pearson; the whimsy vocals backed by curious percussion and addictive bassline wrapped in melody will appeal to those who like something a little off the mainstream map. A treat for those that like their pop dressed in a dreamy transcendental realm of experimental yet beep corrosion free loveliness.

Tracks from the album vary comfortably under the umbrella of ambient and techno, seducing in the lazy luxury of the day or the mystery of late night repose. Dark without being too heavy, the chosen taster has to be the discerning and delightful 'Year Off' which has a little Mode/New Order feel going on and topped with the ambrosial vocals of Mary is a fine standard to set for an album.

'Original Colors' does have some of The Knife's more accessible creations woven in to their own sound amongst the rest of the tracks. This is their third album and now the pair seem to be coming out of hiding and drawing in some well deserved attention.

Zambri - On Call

Another interesting release for next week is the EP Glossolalia from sisters Cristi Jo and Jessica Zambri. In complete contrast to the previous band, this is not for relaxing, more spine tingling, ear bleeding 'I'm not sure what that was but it was good' feeling.

This is bonkers but brilliant glitch pop, again memorably haunts but not too heavy with a touch of psychedelic craziness going on. Check out the eccentrically superb bleeps and images below for 'On Call', which reminds me a bit of Siouxsie's 'Peek-a-Boo', turned up a notch or two.

Zambri's music seems to be turning up in the most unexpected of places including the catwalks of high fashion in Europe that does match well with the fearless and unbridled creativity within the music. For something a little more tuned down but equally capturing, jump on this link for another track off the EP 'Heather' which has a resplendent build up and outstandingly effectual chorus to hook you if you like something verging on the weird...enjoy.

New Order to play London!
Words: Orac

EY may have taken a few steps back from covering wrinkly electropop but some bands do deserve those NME 'God Like' genius awards and there were ripples of excitement here at Nerve Centre EY when New Order (MK3) announced a sudden live date in the music capital of the world.

Following the success of October's live dates in Ancienne Belgique and Paris Bataclan with Gillian Gilbert back on synths, Bernard Sumner & co surprised everyone with news of another live date on December 10th at London's new live venue Troxy. Tickets went on sale last Friday and you can still grab a few via 'Getmein!' though they may set you back by 70 pounds (before booking fees). - that may well be a hefty ticket price as the economy of Europe collapses all around us but New Order are living legends...with a mighty back catalogue of stomping singles.

Hooky however won't be forking out a week's royalties for a ticket to the Troxy show after vowing to 'f*** New Order' according to a recent news item over on XFM. Hooky was also quoted as saying: 'Everyone knows that NEW ORDER without PETER HOOK is like QUEEN without FREDDIE MERCURY, U2 without THE EDGE, SOOTY without SWEEP!'

'If they think I'm just going to scuttle off to a cabin in the woods, they've got another thing coming. They're dickheads. People go and hide, but I don't. I'm a fighter. I'm going to come out fighting'

EY is off now to chill to New Order's rather lovely 'Your Silent Face' from 'Power, Corruption & Lies' and remember the good New Ordery times....
