New Order - new gigs!

Manchester's finest... and perennial EY faves New Order have this week surprised Planet Pop with the news that they are to reform and play live for the first time in five years minus all but one of the original definitive New Order line-up.

Following a highly publicized fall-out with lead singer Bernard Sumner, bassist Hooky will sadly not be swaggering about the stage this time round but long term fans will be delighted to read that keyboard diva Gillian Gilbert will be back. Gillian originally left the band to care for her daughter a few years before the release of 2001's 'Get Ready'.

The first of two gigs will take place on October 17th at Ancienne Belgique with another performance the next day at the lush sounding Paris Bataclan are both benefit gigs for Michael Shamberg - a Factory Records operative who also produced New Order's early videos including 'True Faith' that dominated MTV's global airwaves in 1987. Michael has been suffering from a serious illness and profits from the gigs will go towards his healthcare.

Celebrate the news of Gillian's return to New Order with this classic and bloomin' brilliant clip of the band performing 'True Faith' at Reading Festival in 1998....

Emika - video for Professional Loving

Emika
Continuing the love for Emika, the double A-side 'Pretend/Professional Loving' is out on the 5th September and on the back of the rather fabulous live footage for 'Pretend', debuting this week has been the atmospherically charged Bat For Lashes 'What a girl to do?' styled video.

That is where the similarity stops though with Emika's otherworldly vocals interplaying with the some clever and unique button pushing which draws from the glitchy electronic goddess' classical training, dub techno and Berlin 'cool' influences.

The video starts with the drama of a waning moon on a cloudy night, a thoughtful Emika dragging a huge burden along a tree lined road and setting it alight while watching on coldly. Its simple yet effective formula is shot in a sophisticated way mirroring the down tempo but nonetheless filmic sound and movement of the track.

It's almost an anti climax to read Emika's own words of the track being about the fakery of friendship and control within the music industry circa the famous Prince 'slave' statement. Although thinking of it in light of suppressed creativity, rather than cold business, control over creativity can evoke the drama of a manipulated love affair and this video does portray this within its mystery and collision with nature and commerce.

As I've said before, both tracks are equally strong, seductive and build anticipation in wake of a debut album which is already getting a lot of media attention. EY will be present at the album launch party in October and previewing the album so do keep eyes and ears open for the verdict which is already looking like a keeper and inimitable talent for 2011.

The debut album 'Emika' will be released by Ninja Tune on October 3rd.
